The Special Interest Group on Art Games explores innovative, critical and subversive strategies in fine art, including historical movements that use games as their material, or play-culture as their subject. This group focuses on research on the expressive boundaries and possibilities of gaming systems in art applications. The digital game, as an independent medium, opens up media arts to a diverse audience. We are going to examine the strong connection between games and art practices by playing and discussing Art Games. We will investigate the historical background of games in order to understand their significance in structuring media, culture and real world models. Areas of interest include social-political criticism, the performativity of game-play, documentary games, serious games, indie games, pervasive games, conceptual works and augmented game-play strategies.
